Toshiba's new Softbank 815T PB is the robot/mobile phone hybrid I would've dreamed of if mobiles had been around when I was a kid. It's made for an upcoming Japanese TV drama called Ketai Sousakan 7 and it really does transform, Transformers-like, into a robot toy complete with tiny bunched fists. Even the display-face is part of the robot effect, and the phone comes with games with the same theme. It's in silver and black, has a QVGA screen, 3.2 megapixel camera and is a 3G phone, so it might venture outside Japanese shores.

Eco-friendly mobiles from Samsung

Like Nokia, Samsung is also getting into the environment friendly mobile groove and has launched 2 new handsets - W510 and F268 recently showcased at the World IT show in Seoul, Korea - with that motif.

W510 is Samsung's first mobile phone with 'bio-plastic' made from natural material extracted from corn. Samsung has been making an effort to develop more renewable and eco-friendly material compared with common plastic produced from petroleum. Even while producing the W510 handset, the company did not use any heavy metals, such as Lead, Mercury, and Cadmium, and applied water-soluble coating.

Samsung F268 with all the accessories including charger and headset does not contain BFRs (Brominated Flame Retardant) or PVC. In addition, the handset has an alarm function to encourage users to unplug their charger when the devices are fully charged. The product is also following the Energy Star requirements as well, which is strict energy-efficiency guidelines set by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the US Department of Energy.

"Samsung is striving to continue to be a strong corporate citizen that contributes to environmental sustainability," said Geesung Choi, President of Samsung's Telecommunication Business. "Now we are trying not only to launch more environmentally-conscious products with more renewable material and less energy consuming, but also to expand proactively set up a phone recycling system."

For now the W510 has been launched for the Korean market and F268 for the Chinese market. Hopefully they’ll make it to India as well, as keeping the environment safe should be a major concern here too.

Samsung SGH i718 Windows Mobile PDA smartphoneapproved by FCC

Samsung SGH i718 is the newest Windows Mobile 5.0 based smartphone/PDA slated to be released in China in the beginning of the next year. However it looks like Samsung has plans for this smartphone in the U.S. market to. At least the Korean cellphone giant took necessary steps to get the approval from FCC for this handset.

Introduced during ITU Telecom World trade show in Hong Kong this week, Samsung i718 runs on the latest mobile OS from Microsoft - Windows Mobile 5.0 and has a lot of cool features.

Samsung stayed true to it’s “slim” cellphone design philosophy and made this cellphone PDA only 13.5 mm thick (108 mm long and 58 mm wide) . Samsung SGH i718 is a Quad band GSM/GPRS/Edge phone with big and bright 2.8″ QVGA 65k color screen, 2 megapixel camera, 64 MB of RAM, 128 MB ROM and microSD memory card slot.

One of the interesting software applications included with Samsung i718 PDA phone is a business card recognition feature. You can take a picture of a business card with 2 megapixel camera, and your cellphone will automagically recognize the information on it and store the contact phone, e-mail and other data in your contact manager.

Neonode N2 Mobile Phone

Neonode, a Swedish mobile communications brand, will launch their latest mobile phone Neonode N2 in the US in 2008. The phone utilizes exclusive neno user interface and zForce optical touch screen technology.

The most recent development in mobile phone technology is the emerging popularity of the touch screen. Neonode N2 uses the most advanced touch screen technology, the zForce optical touch screen. It doesn’t need any hard pressure or stylus, but works quickly and accurately by reacting to sweeping and tapping signals on the screen. The intuitively organized user interface, neno, also enables the applications and contents to be accessed fast and easily.

Our main focus is the user experience, which is the true key behind Neonode N2. It ranges from how you are able to use it, which we have enabled through zForce the optical screen, down to the easiness your applications and content can be accessed, which we solved through the combination of zForce and neon, the user interface,” said Mikael Hagman, President and CEO of Neonode.

Neonode N2’s United States phone carrier and retail availability will be announced the second quarter 2008. Neonode will be showcasing Neonode N2 mobile phone, as well as their intuitive technologies at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas January 7-10.

BBC launched a iPod Touch and iPhone compatible version of the iPlayer.

The menus full of stuff

The Top Gear show full of moving excitment.

Early March BBC launched a iPod Touch and iPhone compatible version of the iPlayer. I have been using it now for a few weeks and I find myself returning for more content. What strikes me as super interesting is that I actually almost prefer watching it on my iPod Touch rather than the Macbook Air, the reason being that the video is so amazingly crisp on the iPod Touch where as if I use it on the Macbook in full screen it gets grainy.

This is living proof that we are moving towards mobile personal video. A system that is a fusion between, broadband streaming, broadcast and PVR functionality with 'more' option for browsing could revolutionize mobiles. At a 3.5" screen we have a comfortable size that still fits nicely in the pocket. The technology is maturing faster than the business models, which should ensure good user experiences once hitting the mainstream.

A typical consumer Wi-Fi, with up to 8Mbit e.g. BT Broadband seems enough to carry the BBC content crisps to my handheld terminal. It is of course not enough to get a crisp full screen experience on my laptop. What becomes truly apparent is that quality of service is crucial. Getting a circle of spinning dots will be a universal turn off. I do think consumers will start to value quality of service and pay for it. That means emergence of the smart pipe.

There is lots of room to improve the interface of the iPlayer on the iPod Touch and the iPhone. There is too much pinching and panning for a fluid experience, but for a fast beta i give it my thumbs up.

T-Mobile UK slides out latest Sidekick

T-Mobile last night unveiled the Sidekick Slide, the first handset in the consumer-friendly email gadget range to appear since T-Mobile cut its ties with Sharp and signed up Motorola as a manufacturer.

The quad-band GSM/GPRS/Edge phone, pictures of which first appeared July, is targeted at 15- to 30-year-olds looking for the “perfect companion" to a "busy social life”, T-Mobile said.

It has a 2.5in, 320 x 240 LCD screen and, T-Mobile claimed, displays web pages as they would appear on your PC. Well, sort of, we'd say. A Yahoo! IM messaging client is included too, but T-Mobile told us that other IM apps can't be loaded.

Images, taken on its 1.3-megapixel camera, and other content, such as emails, can be saved to a Micro SD card of up to 4GB – although one’s not included. Alternatively, users can transfer content off the phone over Bluetooth or USB . The Samsung Fashion Phone Tells Us When We’ve Eaten Too Much

Now I like a nicely styled, pretty phone as much as the next girl, but the plethora of ‘pink girly’ phones that companies produce in the hope they will lure girls into starry eyed submission is getting a little annoying. Now this offering is rather curious, as at first glance it does look nice, but moving beyond the clam-shell design, it’s packed with frankly insulting features, from a calorie counting system to a perfume matcher.

Targeted to the mid to the low end cameraphone market segment, SE K630i keeps the usual good looks of the latest Sony Ericsson handsets and comes with 3.6 Mbps HSDPA connectivity option.

However the looks and this turbo 3G capability is about the only feature to distinguish Sony Ericsson K630 Cybershot from other camera phones.

Other K630 Cybershot specs include 2 megapixel camera and front CIF camera for video telephony, Bluetooth 2.0 A2DP and USB 2. connectivity, Memory Stick Micro card slot, 3.5 mm headphone jack, MPEG4/H.263-4 capable media player, POP3/IMAP4 e-mail client, PC synchronization and shortcuts to various Internet services from MSN, YAHOO and Google.

Just had my Samsung i8510 delivered

I got my brand new Samsung i8510 delivered today. The i8510 has just recently been released at Mobiles.co.uk and so I bought it on Orange and got a great free gift too!

The mobile phone itself is very impressive, the reason I wanted it was because of the 8 megapixel camera, I tend to take a lot of photos on my phone and I thought it would be better than having a digital camera as well, when I can just buy the Samsung mobile and have a phone with 16GB memory and a great 8 mega pixel camera.

I have never owned an 8 mega pixel camera before and I can definitely tell the difference between my friend’s normal camera phones and my one. The quality of the image is so much clearer and with my i8510 I have an auto focus which is very helpful when I am trying to take a picture of my girlfriend against a scenic backdrop.

My friends and I always use the smile detection feature on the Samsung because we are all used to face detection on our other camera phones but smile detection was something I had not heard of before I bought the i8510.

Another great feature in the camera is that it has a multi shot mode as opposed to a normal camera phone. The Samsung i8510 actually has the same modes and options as a top of the range digital camera and is probably one of the best mobile phone purchases I have ever made. I would highly recommend it.
